A priest in Africa, who had been educated at Duquesne University, was shot and killed Sunday, authorities said.
Father Evaristus Mushi was headed to lead a service when he was killed by assailants in Zanzibar, semi-independent islands off of Tanzania, according to the International Business Times.
"This vicious and cowardly act is the third directed against a religious leader in Zanzibar since November 2012 and goes against the long held values and culture of peace in Zanzibar," U.S. ambassador to Tanzinia Alfonso E. Lenhardt said in a statement.
"Religious based violence is crime that has no place in Tanzania or anywhere else," he said.
Father Mushi was committed to spreading the gospel, said Father Lou Vallone from St John of God McKees Rocks, reached late Wednesday night.
While Father Mushi was in Pittsburgh, the men briefly stayed in the same rectory, he said.
Father Mushi studied at Duquesne to better the lives of everyone on the island, not just those in his church, Father Vallone said.
