In first homily, Pope Francis urges cardinals to submit to life of sacrifice

VATICAN CITY -- In his first homily as supreme pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis issued a strong call to the cardinals to put their priorities in order.
The Mass with the cardinals was held in the Sistine Chapel, where the cardinals chose the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina to succeed Pope Benedict XVI after his abdication.
He spoke in Italian, without notes. An official translation has not yet been issued.
According to unofficial translations by several news organizations, he reminded the cardinals that they are called to put Christ first, and follow in his life of sacrifice despite the many forces that may push them to do otherwise.
"If we walk without the Cross and build without the Cross and confess in Christ without the Cross, then we are not our Lord's disciples," he said, according to the version from the British Catholic newspaper, The Tablet. "We are a worldly people. We may be bishops, priests, cardinals, popes. But we are not disciples of the Lord."
