France: Sarkozy and Pope Meet Over French Actions Against Roma
Share with others:
President Nicolas Sarkozy met Pope Benedict XVI in the Vatican on Friday after some senior church officials, including local bishops, criticized France's dismantling of illegal migrant camps and its deportation of Roma migrants from Romania and Bulgaria who had overstayed their permitted time in France. Mr. Sarkozy requested the meeting with the pope, who had personally appealed for the acceptance of "legitimate human diversity." The half-hour meeting focused on international issues and the "ethical and social dimensions of economic problems," according to the Vatican. Mr. Sarkozy then visited a chapel where Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran said a "prayer for France," which included an appeal "for the welcome of the persecuted and immigrants."
