Rain is expected to taper off tonight and shouldn't return until Friday evening.
Lee Hendricks, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, is predicting that a cold front will move into the Pittsburgh area from the east between 4 and 6 p.m. Temperatures should remain in the mid 60s and dip into the 40s overnight.
Today's rainfall in the region nearly matched the weather service's predictions of 1 to 2 inches.
Penn Hills received 1.8 inches of rain and 1.3 inches fell in Lawrenceville this morning. Areas such as Moon and Cranberry experienced less than an inch of precipitation.
The highest amount of rain fell south of the Pittsburgh area, where more than two inches were reported in Washington and Greene counties.
The weather caused light delays as PennDOT reported a lane closure on Route 48 in White Oak and Millvale and Shaler experienced minor flooding.
The heavy rain caused some flooding and traffic tie-ups in the morning.
PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi said there was minor flooding on southbound Route 8 in Shaler, just south of Birchfield Road.
