SYLMAR, Ca -- The ruins of nearly 500 homes destroyed by the Sylmar Fire are seen at night at the Oakridge mobile home park. The entire park was declared a crime scene and cadaver dogs brought in to search for victims. The fire, also referred to as the Sayre Fire, charred 10,000 acres, burned 630 structures, and injured five firefighters by Sunday. -
BIRKENHEAD, U.K. -- The Royal Navy's fleet auxillary ship, Fort George, sits in the dock at Cammell Laird shipyard. Although, the company closed in 2001,the former management has rejuvenated the business and now has full orders for production. The former Northwestern Shiprepairers and Shipbuilders Ltd. changed the name to Cammell Laird. -
SRINAGAR, India -- Paramilitary soldiers stand guard on an otherwise deserted street in Indian Kashmir. Voting began Monday amid boycott calls by Muslim separatists who say the state elections will only entrench New Delhi's hold on the troubled region. The elections are to be held in seven phases through Dec. 24 in a staggered process that allows the government to deploy thousands of security forces in each area in an attempt to prevent a repeat of violence during elections in 2002 in which dozens died. -

KREMIKOVTZI, Bulgaria -- The man at right is overshadowed by a blast furnace of Bulgaria's biggest steelmaker Kremikovtzi. The plant's majority stake owner, the Indian company Global Steel Holding of Pramod Mittal, the younger brother of ArcelorMittal's steel tycoon Laksmi Mittal, has stopped providing money and raw materials after failing in several attempts to sell it. Management was forced to begin shutting down its blast furnaces and coal batteries last week. -
RAFAH, GAZA STRIP -- Palestinians lower a cow into a tunnel, smuggling supplies and animals between the Gaza Strip and Egypt as the Gaza crossings remain closed. Israel tightened the blockade in response to continued rocket fire over the weekend and a car bombing, Nov. 17, by Palestinian militants. Muslims are preparing for Eid al-Adha, purchasing cattle to be slaughtered in rememberance of Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son who was spared by God, according to Old Testament texts. -
GOMA, Congo -- At left, a woman raped by a soldier from the Armed Forces of Congo looks at her attacker, Sargent Shumbo Chance, foreground, as a military court was sentencing him to life in prison. Several soldiers were sentenced for rape, looting and dereliction of duty. -
