TRENTON, N.J. -- Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Inc. has recalled dozens of lots of its generic version of cholesterol drug Lipitor because some may contain tiny glass particles, the latest in a string of manufacturing deficiencies that once led U.S. regulators to bar imports of the Indian company's medicines.
Ranbaxy, a subsidiary of Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd., India's biggest drugmaker, on Friday posted a notice on its U.S. website, saying it's recalling 10-, 20- and 40-milligram doses of tablets of atorvastatin calcium. That's generic Lipitor, the cholesterol fighter that reigned for years as the world's top-selling drug.
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Black Friday shoppers in many cities briefly detoured into lottery retailers, drawn off task by the prospects of winning a $325 million Powerball jackpot -- the fourth-largest in the game's history.
A single winner's cash payout would be nearly $213 million before taxes.
Since Powerball tickets doubled in price to $2 in January, the number of tickets sold has decreased, but the sales revenue has made up for it, increasing by about 35 percent, said Norm Lingle, chairman of the Powerball board of directors.
NEW ORLEANS -- The Philippine ambassador says one of the men critically burned in a Nov. 16 offshore oil platform fire has died in Louisiana.
The ambassador, Jose L. Cuisia Jr., says in a news release that 49-year-old Avelino Tajonera died Friday.
Three other men remain hospitalized. The explosion and fire Nov. 16 also killed 42-year-old Ellroy Corporal, whose body was found in the waters nearby. The search for another man, 28-year-old Jerome Malagapo, was called off.
NEW YORK -- Shoppers take note: The frenzy to rush home with those Black Friday deals could land you in jail if you do what Jacquetta Simmons was accused of doing. She was convicted of punching a 70-year-old Wal-Mart worker, and as a result will spend the next five shopping seasons behind bars.
A judge in Batavia, N.Y., sentenced Ms. Simmons, 27, last week after a jury convicted her of assaulting Grace Suozzi following a Christmas Eve 2011 incident in the Batavia store. In a scene caught on camera, Ms. Simmons, who had been asked by Ms. Suozzi to show receipts for purchased items, denied intentionally hitting Ms. Suozzi, who was knocked off her feet and thrown across the floor. Ms. Suozzi suffered facial fractures.
