Port Authority has added 20 hybrid diesel-electric buses to its fleet, bringing the number to 26.

Hybrid buses offer an array of environmental benefits, said bus operations officer Bill Miller. Compared to diesel buses, they produce fewer emissions of nitrogen oxides and fewer particulate, hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions due to their increased fuel economy. On average, hybrid buses also attain 25 percent greater fuel mileage, and a hybrid's brakes and engine experience less wear-and-tear than their diesel-only counterparts.

"Hybrid buses save money, improve local air quality and decrease our nation's dependence on foreign oil," said U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle, who said he secured $700,000 in funding for additional hybrid buses.
