State Rep. Matzie appears to hold off challenger Coder

In a hard-fought race in the Route 65 corridor, incumbent Democrat Robert Matzie appeared to hold off Republican Kathy Coder, with a 12 percentage point lead with 15,000 votes counted.
Ms. Coder, 53, owner of leadership development firm and a Bellevue Council member, ran a well-financed campaign that she said focused on bringing "some new blood and new thinking to create jobs and bring a revitalization in the district."
Mr. Matzie, 44, of Ambridge, first elected in 2008, countered that he was the candidate who voters could trust "to put people before politics to get the job done" and spur development like a petrochemical cracker slated for the area. He also said he'd be better positioned to defend education and transportation from cuts.
As results rolled in, Mr. Matzie said he thought "the truth prevailed. My opponent ran a pretty negative campaign. We stayed on course."
Ms. Coder could not be immediately reached this evening.
