Beverly Mackereth will serve as acting Pennsylvania welfare secretary after the departure of the controversial Gary Alexander, Gov. Tom Corbett's administration announced today.
Ms. Mackereth, a former York County legislator, has served as the department's deputy secretary for the Office of Children, Youth and Families since November 2011.
Mr. Alexander, who supervised for two years a department charged with helping 2.1 million elderly, poor and disabled Pennsylvanians, will leave his $149,804-a-year post by the end of the month.
During his two-year tenure, Mr. Alexander frequently has become a lightning rod for criticism of the administration's cuts to social welfare services -- particularly in his efforts to carry out a mandate to cut "waste, fraud and abuse" within the department.
