McCain speaks in favor of interventionist foreign policy at convention

TAMPA -- Sen. John McCain was a warrior in Vietnam and a warrior on the campaign trail. And tonight he showed that he's still ready to do battle with Democrats and those who would keep the American military from getting involved in world affairs.
In a 15-minute speech at the Republican National Convention, the Arizona senator and one-time presidential candidate advocated an interventionist foreign policy.
He said America must be willing to shape world events, to stand with its allies and to lead by example.
Citizens of oppressed countries "want America's assistance as they struggle to live in peace and security, to expand opportunity for themselves and their children, to replace the injustices of despots with the institutions of democracy and freedom," he said.
He said America is mankind's best hope and that Mitt Romney knows that the country's security and economic interests are tied to the progress of American values.
"I trust him to know that an American president always, always, always stands up for the rights, freedoms, and justice of all people," he said.
