The Allegheny County Democratic Party will make endorsements today for seven offices in the May 21 primary elections: Court of Common Pleas, sheriff, county council, city council, city school board, magisterial district judge and city mayor.
In the hotly contested mayor's race, city Controller Michael Lamb is the only candidate vying for the endorsement after Mayor Luke Ravenstahl dropped out March 1. Candidate Bill Peduto, a city councilman, had chosen not to seek the endorsement, which had a filing deadline of Feb. 1.
Since Mr. Ravenstahl's withdrawal, two other candidates have announced they are running: city council President Darlene Harris and Jack Wagner, the former auditor general who has also served as a state senator and city councilman. At least four others are considering a bid: state Sens. Jim Ferlo and Wayne Fontana, county councilman Bill Robinson and city councilman Ricky Burgess.
On Friday, the Allegheny County Labor Council decided not to endorse a candidate for the mayoral primary. Ms. Harris, Mr. Lamb, Mr. Peduto and Mr. Wagner sought the endorsement, but none was able to muster the two-thirds majority needed to win the union umbrella group's support.
Tuesday is the deadline for filing nominating petitions to enter the May primary.
