Now that spring is finally within sight, more runners will be hitting the road and trail. If you're female and run alone early in the morning or late at night, you could be putting yourself in a vulnerable position.

A short training run can turn into an unexpected training exercise in self-defense if you are attacked or simply get caught off-guard in a threatening way.

How can you better protect yourself? On Thursday, Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon will offer Safe Strides, a free personal self-defense program.

Designed specifically for female runners, the free seminar will demonstrate verbal, nonverbal and physical control tactics to handle a variety of threats. It runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bakery Square, 6425 Penn Ave., East Liberty.

It's being taught by Craig Douglas, a former SWAT team commander and retired police officer with more than 21 years of experience.

Space is limited; for more information or to register, visit pittsburghmarathon.com/Self-Defense.asp or call 412-586-7785.
