Post-Gazette photographer Larry Roberts early this morning captured scenes of a birth of sorts -- the emergence of a monarch butterfly.

These images were taken between 5:45 and 7:25 a.m. with studio lighting on the photographer's dining room table.

Mr. Roberts had been given the chrysalis by the Pittsburgh Zoo for this photographic project.

The butterfly soon begins to emerge.

A new monarch arrives: the butterfly is completely free of its chrysalis.
