Union representing coaches at 14 Pennsylvania universities agrees to new contract

The union representing coaches across Pennsylvania's 14 state-owned universities has reached a tentative agreement on a new contract running from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2015, officials said today.
If ratified, the pact would apply to 400 coaches represented by the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties.
The union said both sides agreed to a deal that resembles other recent pacts reached with state workers, including increases in minimum salaries, and a modified health care co-payment.
The union said in a statement that the co-pay increase is "affordable and helps (the State System) maintain the current plan."
The statement said current coaches and retirees "will share the health care plan design that is negotiated for the faculty."
The coaches are a bargaining unit within APSCUF, whose roughly 5,000 faculty are still negotiating for a new pact to replace one that expired June 30, 2011.
"We're certainly pleased that we have been able to conclude negotiations with another of our bargaining units and remain hopeful that we will be able to conclude negotiations with our final bargaining unit, our faculty, very soon," State System spokesman Kenn Marshall said.
