Ten schools get awards that include bonuses for teachers

For the first time, Pittsburgh Public Schools is awarding about $2.1 million in bonuses to teachers and other union workers at 10 schools as well as one closed school that are showing so much growth in student achievement that they are among the best in the state.
The district today released the name of 10 schools -- named STAR schools for Students and Teachers Achieving Results -- which won the award for 2011-12.
Under the contract with the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers, teachers who worked in those schools will receive a bonus of up to $6,000, pro-rated according to the number of days they were assigned to the school. Paraprofessionals and technical-clerical workers represented by the PFT will receive bonuses of up to $2,000.
About 80 percent of bonuses will be paid for by a federal Teacher Incentive Fund grant. More than 500 staff members will receive bonuses.
The list includes: Pittsburgh Brookline PreK-8, Dilworth PreK-5 in East Liberty, Fort Pitt K-5 in Garfield, Fulton PreK-5 in Highland Park, Sunnyside PreK-8 in Stanton Heights, Weil PreK-5 in the Hill District, Whittier K-5 in Mount Washington and South Hills 6-8 in Beechview. Fort Pitt is now closed.
Most of these schools scored within the top 15 percent in terms of growth among schools in the state.
In addition, three other schools met STAR criteria for special schools: Pittsburgh Conroy, Pioneer and Oliver Citywide Academy, which until this fall was at McNaugher.
