State System faculty union leaders approve strike authorization vote

Leadership for the union representing some 6,000 faculty and coaches in the 14 universities in Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education today unanimously approved a strike authorization vote.
That does not mean a strike is imminent, but it is closer. The members of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties union at the 14 campuses will follow up with their own strike authorization vote sometime in November.
Today's vote in State College was lodged by 106 union delegates from around the state. If the full union membership approves a similar authorization next month that gives their contract negotiators the go-ahead to call for a strike on their own.
Faculty from the 14 universities -- which in Western Pennsylvania include California, Clarion, Edinboro, Indiana and Slippery Rock -- have been working without a contract for 15 months.
