West Virginia University police are seeking information about an urn believed to contain human cremains that was found on WVU property.

WVU facilities employees found the urn in a wooded area of University property on Outlook Street in Morgantown. It appeared to have been exposed to the elements for an extended period before being discovered, said WVU Police Capt. Phil Scott.

Local law enforcement officials have been working with WVU police on the investigation but have not found the owner. There had been one previously reported case of cremains being stolen but the family in that case has been contacted and the urn did not match the one they reported as stolen.

Authorities also have contacted local funeral homes but none could provide any information about the discovered urn.

Anyone who may have information is asked to contact Capt. Scott at 304-293-3136.
