Pittsburgh schools set to renew Lane's contract

The board of Pittsburgh Public Schools is planning to vote this coming Wednesday on renewing the contract of superintendent Linda Lane.
At an agenda review meeting Wednesday, school solicitor Ira Weiss said next week's motion will call for extending the contract through June 30, 2016.
Asked after the meeting whether she expects the motion to pass, board president Sharene Shealey said, "I certainly hope so."
"She's done a good job, and she's a force of continuity for the district."
Noting that she herself and three other incumbents are not seeking re-election to the school board this year, Ms. Shealey said that "solidifying Dr. Lane and her leadership I think is an important signal to send to the employees, the students and the citizens of our city that we believe that our district is moving in the right direction."
In an interview, Ms. Lane said, "It's still a voting matter."
But if her contract is extended, she said she would not seek a further extension.
"I really have cherished having this opportunity, but this is it for me," she said.
Ms. Lane, 63, of Highland Park took the post in January 2011.
She joined the district as deputy superintendent in 2007 after a lengthy career in Des Moines, Iowa.
Twice, she has turned down a pay raise, leaving her pay at $200,000 for 2013.
