Penn State University on Friday raised average room-and-board rates by 4.4 percent and announced a record enrollment of nearly 96,000 students, fueled largely by growth in online learning.
Both occurred during a Penn State trustees meeting that also saw approval of several facilities projects.
The new rates are effective for the 2011-12 academic year. The average room-and-board rate, which Penn State said involved a double-occupancy room and the most common meal plan, will increase in cost by $185 to $4,370 per semester.
Enrollment university-wide grew by 2 percent or 1,532 students from last year, officials said. The total reflects main and branch campus enrollment, including undergraduate, graduate law and medical students. Online enrollment in the university's World Campus grew by 19 percent to 8,524.
Penn State's main campus, University Park, has 44,034 students.
Trustees also:
• Hired Crawford Architects of Kansas City, Mo., and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., to design the new 200,000-square-foot main campus ice arena.
• Approved plans to renovate Pollock Dining Commons, an $11.7 million main campus project.
• Approved final main campus plans for a 20,000-square-foot Biological Research Lab. The facility is to help with immunology and infections disease research, officials said.
