New Brighton Area appoints new superintendent

The New Brighton Area school board this week unanimously appointed Joseph A. Guarino as the district's new superintendent effective July 1.

Mr. Guarino, 33, holds a doctorate in in administrative and policy studies from the University of Pittsburgh. He is currently the assistant to the superintendent and has been with the district since 2004, serving as a middle school science teacher and principal.

Mr. Guarino was awarded a five-year contract. He will replace Superintendent David Pietro, who will retire June 30 after 41 years with the district.
