Massachusetts administrator is new Duquesne provost

Timothy Austin, a senior administrator with the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., is Duquesne University's new provost and vice president for academic affairs, university officials announced today.
He will begin the job July 15. His predecessor, Ralph Pearson, will remain at Duquesne University.
Mr. Austin is vice president for academic affairs and dean at the College of the Holy Cross, a position he has held since 2006, Duquesne officials said.
Before that, he was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Creighton University. He has also taught at Loyola University Chicago and was chairman of its English department from 1996 to 2001.

A Duquesne statement announcing the appointment said Mr. Austin is a linguistics expert and has written a number of books and scholarly articles and has presented numerous papers.
"Dr. Tim Austin brings to us a long and successful history as an administrator in Catholic higher education," Duquesne President Charles J. Dougherty said in a statement. "He is sure to do the same as he builds on Dr. Ralph Pearson's success as Duquesne's provost. Dr. Austin was enthusiastically endorsed by every constituency that met with him during his on-campus interview."
Mr. Austin was born in Tonbridge, England. He received his master's degree in English language and literature from Oxford University's Lincoln College and his doctoral degree in linguistics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
