IUP names Kent State's Moerland as provost

Indiana University of Pennsylvania said today that its new provost and vice president for academic affairs, Timothy Moerland, will start Jan. 14.
Since August, Mr. Moerland, 56, has been assistant to the provost for special projects at Kent State University, an official there said. Before that, he was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Kent State.
Mr. Moerland also held positions at Florida State University that included biological sciences department chair, interim director of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute and associate dean of the college of arts and sciences, officials at IUP said in a statement announcing the appointment.
He will succeed Gerald W. Intemann, IUP provost and vice president for academic affairs since April 2008, who previously said he planned to retire from the position, the university said.
IUP is the largest of the State System of Higher Education's 14 universities with just less than 15,400 students.
Mr. Moreland has taught biological sciences at both Kent State and Florida State, officials at IUP said. He holds bachelor's degree in biological science from Michigan State University and a master's and doctoral degree in zoology, both from the University of Maine, according to IUP.
