The Heinz Endowments awarded $1 million to Community College of Allegheny County to help enhance math education at CCAC.

CCAC announced the award today.

The grant will provide resources to help increase the completion rate in remedial courses. According to CCAC, 65 percent of its entering students are placed into remedial math courses.

In addition to professional development for faculty, the grant will pay for drop-in "Math Cafes" which will offer extra math help outside of class, including making math faculty and tutors available during the day, evening and weekend.

Various computer-assisted math activities also will be available at the cafes.

"We recognize that many students who come to CCAC require remediation in mathematics, so we are grateful for the generous support of The Heinz Endowments to overcome this hurdle on the path to a college education," CCAC president Alex Johnson said in a press release.
