Head of State System of Higher Education steps down

John Cavanaugh, chancellor of the State System of Higher Education, is resigning to acccept a position leading the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area, based in Washington, D.C.

His departure is effective at the end of February, officials said this afternoon.

As chancellor, Mr. Cavanaugh oversaw the 14 state-owned universities, among them California, Clarion, Ediboro, Indiana and Slippery Rock universities in Western Pennsylvania. The system has 115,000 students and more than 5,000 faculty.
