CMU names new engineering dean

James Garrett Jr. has been named dean of the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, the school announced today.
Mr. Garrett is the Thomas Lord Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He fills the deanship vacated in August by Pradeep K. Khosla, who was hired as chancellor of the University of California, San Diego.
Mr. Garrett received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in engineering from Carnegie Mellon. In 1990, he joined the faculty at the Carnegie Institute of Technoloy, the formal name of CMU's engineeering college and previously headed the department of civil and environmental engineering
"We know Jim's broad experience in research, teaching and creating meaningful partnerships with business and industry make him an excellent choice," sad Mark Kamlet, CMU provost and executive vice president.
