Carnegie Science Awards announced

Scientists from the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, a University of Pittsburgh expert in regenerative medicine, teachers and entrepreneurs are some of this year's winners of the 2008 Carnegie Science Awards, announced Wednesday.
Established by the Carnegie Science Center and sponsored by Eaton Corp., the awards, now in their 12th year, honor the accomplishments of individuals and organizations that have improved lives through commitment, courage and contributions.
" … These extraordinary winners are driving economic growth and developing tomorrow's scientific workforce for our region," said Joanna Haas, science center director. Winners will be honored at a celebration on May 9.
Awards are:
Chairman's award: Robotics Institute, CMU
Advanced manufacturing: Paul Medwick, James Thiel and Andrew Wagner, PPG Industries
Advance materials: Stephen F. Badylak, McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine
Catalyst: John W. Manzetti, Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse
Corporate innovation: Medrad Inc.
Elementary educator: Marie Lowe and Lynette Zimmerman, Avella Area School District
Middle level educator: Nancy Bires, Hermitage School District
High school educator: Ellen Wright, Pittsburgh Public Schools
School district: Riverview School District
University/post-secondary educator: Joseph J. McCarthy, Ph.D., Robert S. Parker, Ph.D., Mary Besterfield-Sacre, Ph.D., University of Pittsburgh
Start-up entrepreneur: John Shearer, Powercast Corp.
Entrepreneur: Rich Lunak, Innovation Works
Environmental: Richard V. Piacentini, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens
Information technology: Entertainment Technology Center, CMU
