Westmoreland County public safety officials and hazardous-materials crews are on the scene of a crash between a tractor-trailer and a train in Salina, a village in Bell Township.

Dan Stevens, the county's deputy emergency services coordinator and public information officer, said the tractor-trailer driver was attempting to turn around and backed onto the tracks when the Norfolk Southern train struck its back end about 7:30 a.m.

A 55-gallon drum of the flammable cleaning agent xylene spilled inside the trailer and partially outside the back door, Mr. Stevens said. Hazmat crews were gathering the material and a cleanup company will also respond.

Three engines and three train cars derailed following the crash. It was not clear in which direction the train was traveling.

The tractor-trailer driver was taken to the hospital for a bruise on his head, Mr. Stevens said. No other injuries were reported.
