A state police trooper has been placed on unpaid leave after he was charged with assaulting his wife this week in Westmoreland County, a state police spokesman confirmed.

Paul C. Mauser, a trooper in the Belle Vernon barracks, has been charged with aggravated assault and one count each of terrorisitc threats and simple assault.

Trooper Mauser, 38, and his wife, Jennifer Mauser, had a verbal argument Wednesday that ended in a physical altercation, according to court documents. Trooper Mauser pushed Mrs. Mauser, causing her to fall down a flight of stairs and break her ankle, police said.

During the altercation, he threatened to kill her and, after her ankle broke, said something had to happen and "one of us has to die," police said.

Court documents show Trooper Mauser was arraigned Wednesday afternoon and faces a preliminary hearing in March.

State troopers in Greensburg are investigating.
