North Huntingdon commissioners reject stationary DUI checkpoints

The North Huntingdon commissioners rejected a plan tonight to begin stationary DUI checkpoints in the township.
Commissioners voted 6-1 to "cease and desist" any attempt to get a grant to start stationary checkpoints after four residents spoke against stationary checkpoints, and a majority of people in the meeting audience raised their hands to indicate opposition to the checkpoints.
During stationary checkpoints, police pull over most or all drivers on selected highways looking for people driving under the influence of alcohol.
Stationary checkpoints differ from officers pulling people over for erratic driving or traffic violations and checking them for alcohol use.
At tonight's meeting, Commissioner Rich Gray said 49 people sent him emails opposing stationary checkpoints in response to an email he sent out.
In August, commissioners Dave Herold, Donald Austin, Zach Haigis and Tony Martino initially voted to apply for the grant, and commissioners Rich Gray and Brian West voted against applying for it. Commissioner Lee Moffatt was absent during the August vote.
Tonight, Mr. Gray, Mr. Haigis, Mr. West, Mr. Martino, Mr. Herold and Mr. Moffatt voted to cease application for the grant, with Mr. Austin dissenting.
