A man was killed and his wife injured when their motorcycle crashed Sunday evening, the Westmoreland County coroner's office said.

William G. Shank, 56, of New Alexandria, suffered a major head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in Derry. His wife, Mary Jane, who was riding on the back of the bike, was taken to Allegheny General Hospital with serious injuries, deputy coroner John Ackerman said.

The pair was headed west on Route 22 on their 2007 Harley Davidson when a tire blew out near Auction Barn Road about 7:50 p.m. He lost control of the motorcycle and it tipped over onto its side, sliding about 30 feet, Mr. Ackerman said.

Mr. Shank was pronounced dead at the scene. He died of blunt force trauma to the head, Mr. Ackerman said.

Both were wearing helmets.
