Man hit by train, dies in Westmoreland County

A man is dead after being struck by a train around 6 p.m. yesterday in Derry Township.

Donald B. McCreery Jr., 39, of New Derry, intentionally placed himself on the tracks in front of a westbound Norfolk Southern train, according to witness statements provided by the Westmorland County Coroner's Office. The coroner has ruled the death as a suicide.

The train sounded its horn and engaged its emergency braking system before fatally striking Mr. McCreery. The train came to a full stop about half a mile following the impact.

Deputy Coroner Joshua C. Zappone pronounced Mr. McCreery dead at 6:54 p.m. at the scene.

The Pennsylvania State Police Greensburg Barracks and Norfolk Southern Police have launched an investigation.
