A Ligonier woman was found dead early this morning after the car she was driving crashed into a boulder.

Kerry Bittner, 41, was found inside a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier on Youngstown Ridge Road in Unity shortly before 1 a.m. The engine of the car was still warm so officials are guessing that the crash occurred about midnight, according to the Westmoreland County coroner's office.

Workers there said Ms. Bittner was the only person in the car when it was traveling east, failed to make left-hand curve and "climbed a small embankment" before striking the boulder.

Speed was likely a factor, according to the coroner's office, and Ms. Bittner was not wearing a seatbelt.

McCracken Funeral Home in Ligonier will handle funeral services.
