Ex-Steelers linebacker reports to prison for DUI sentence

Former Steelers linebacker Clark Haggans reported to the Westmoreland County Prison today to serve time for a DUI conviction in Arizona.
Mr. Haggans, 35, who now plays for the Arizona Cardinals, will serve 48 hours in prison and then do seven days of work release, Westmoreland County Sheriff Jon Held said.
In a statement issued through his agent today, Mr. Haggans said he wanted to "set the record straight" about his arrest. He wrote that he was attending a concert on April 21, 2011, when a babysitter called to say his five-year-old daughter was having trouble breathing.
Mr. Haggans wrote that he tried to find his wife, who was supposed to drive, but could not find her among the crowd.
"I felt that my only choice was to drive home," he wrote. "In hindsight, I should have found another way home, and I take full responsibility for my actions."
It was unclear Wednesday night why Mr. Haggans was serving his sentence in Westmoreland County.
The Steelers drafted Mr. Haggans in 2000 and he played for the team until 2008. He had the second most tackles on the team in the Steelers' victory in Super Bowl XL.
