West Brownsville tax collector Cindy L. Lacey was charged with theft today after the Washington County district attorney said she stole more than $115,000 across several years.

"My office was contacted by officials from West Brownsville after the Borough noticed that revenue from taxes had been diminishing over several years," District Attorney Eugene Vittone said in a press release.

Ms. Lacey, 58, was arraigned this morning on a felony charge of theft by failure to make required disposition of funds.

Assistant District Attorney Joseph Zupancic said in a phone interview the district attorney's office began investigating about six months ago. He said Ms. Lacey, 58, "made statements implicating herself" and surrendered about 11:30 a.m.
