A Maryland mother and daughter were the victims of the fatal crash that occurred Saturday in South Strabane when a tractor-trailer swerved across the median of Interstate 70 and crushed their car.
The victims were identified today as Kaitlin Young Babka, 21, and her mother, Karen Leigh Babka, 57, both of Hughesville, Md.
State police said Karen Babka was driving a Dodge Charger eastbound on I-70 about 11:30 a.m. when, for "unknown reasons," a truck driven by Yevgeniy Bugreyev, 44, of West Sacramento, Calif., crossed the median into oncoming traffic.
The tractor-trailer slid sideways, crushing the Dodge and pushing it over a hillside. Both women died at the scene.
Mr. Bugreyev was charged with two counts of homicide by vehicle and is in the Washington County Jail on a $1 million bond, pending a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Robert Redlinger at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
A third vehicle collided with the overturned truck. The driver of that vehicle, a Chevrolet Trailblazer was Darlene Gray, 59, of Washington, Pa. Ms. Gray and a child passenger had moderate injuries.
Two other passengers in that vehicle, Brandy Gray, 33, of Scenery Hill, and another child who was not named, were seriously injured.
