Seismic testing is set to begin this month in Robinson, Washington County, as part of the Marcellus Shale natural gas exploration process.

Dawson Geophysical Co. of Midland, Texas, plans to start testing on various properties south of Route 22, township officials said Monday night.

Robinson supervisors approved an application in February for the firm to conduct the geophysical tests in compliance with the township's regulations. Dawson works with driller Range Resources.

In general, seismic tests involve creating vibrations with explosives or thumper trucks to map underground features such as shale formations.

Robinson officials said that another company, Aguila, has expressed interest in seismic testing in the township but has not yet submitted an application.

According to the website for Aguila Exploration Consultants Ltd., the firm is a seismic project management and consulting company based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
