A 22-year-old man from Washington County twice attempted to commit suicide Tuesday morning along Interstate 79 near Canonsburg, according to state police.

The man climbed over the guide rail from a hillside onto the southbound shoulder at South Central Avenue Bridge then stepped in front of a tractor-trailer, a state police news release said. The man was hit by the truck, knocking him out of his shoes. He then grabbed his shoes, police said, jumped the guide rail and walked away.

He was found at his workplace nearby and was taken to Canonsburg Hospital, then flown to a Pittsburgh hospital for further treatment.

About 30 minutes before that incident, police said, the man was riding in a car taking him to work when he jumped from the moving vehicle onto I-79 northbound near Exit 41.
