Three people were killed and one was injured in a head-on collision in Washington County this morning.
Smith police Chief Bernie LaRue said Aaron Herriott, 18, of Bulger, was on his way to school when he collided with a van in the 600 block of Joffre Bulger Road at about 7:45 a.m. The Burgettstown Middle/High School senior was not wearing a seatbeat and died on impact.
The driver of the van, 62-year-old John Alouise, of Burgettstown, and his wife, Debra, 51, also died at the scene. Her age was not available.
Smith police Officer Craig Arture was the first to arrive on the scene and pulled Scott Alouise, 20, out of the van's passenger seat. He was not severely injured but was flown to Allegheny General Hospital as a precaution.
John and Debra Alouise were his parents.
Police estimated that Mr. Herriott was traveling at between 60 to 70 miles per hour on the road, which has a speed limit of 40.
The Alouise family was less than two miles from their home when their car collided with Mr. Herriott's. Police said they were en route to Westminster College in New Wilmington to pick up their daughter, a student there.
Mr. Herriott had celebrated a birthday May 5 and planned to attend his prom tonight.
Burgettstown Area School District superintendent Deborah Jackson described him as an "all-around great kid" who had a wide circle of friends and worked after school. He spent half days at the high school then studied auto mechanics at the Western Area Career and Technical Center in Chartiers.
