State System chancellor takes post in Virginia

The chancellor of Pennsylvania's 14 state-owned universities has been named the next president of the University of Mary Washington, officials with the Fredericksburg, Va., institution announced yesterday.
Judy Hample, 60, assumes her duties July 1.
Dr. Hample, who announced last June her intent to step down as chancellor, has held the job since 2001, a tenure during which State System of Higher Education enrollment rose from 99,000 to 110,000 students.
She is leaving for a public university with 5,000 students halfway between Washington, D.C., and Richmond, Va.
"After spending the last 10 years in system administration, I am truly excited to be given this opportunity to return to my roots in higher education, to a campus environment where I will be able to work closely again with members of a university community," Dr. Hample said in a statement released by her new employer. "I was drawn to the University of Mary Washington for several reasons, including its impressive history, its public mission."
In making the announcement, the school's Board of Visitors noted Dr. Hample's nearly two-decade career in higher education, including her previous position as a vice chancellor with the State University System of Florida's Board of Regents.
Teresa Mannix, a spokeswoman for Mary Washington, said Dr. Hample's salary as the school's eighth president is being finalized.
She succeeds William Frawley, who was fired by UMW's Board of Visitors nearly one year ago, after he was charged with driving under the influence twice in a two-day span. He was later convicted of the charges.
At the state system, Dr. Hample's salary is $327,718.
Meanwhile, the committee looking for her successor has narrowed its search to 12 to 15 candidates, system spokesman Kenn Marshall said.
Dr. Hample has not decided on her final day in the job, Mr. Marshall said.
