State System, union agree on new labor contract

Leaders of Pennsylvania's 14 state-owned universities and the union representing roughly 600 admissions, financial aid, residence life and other student support services employees Wednesday announced a tentative agreement on a new labor contract.
A joint statement by the State System of Higher Education and the State College and University Professional Association did not include details of the proposed pact. It runs through June 30, 2015.
The statement said both sides viewed the pact as fair and will recommend its ratification, first by the union membership and then by the State System's board of governors.
In another as-yet-unresolved labor dispute, State System Chancellor John Cavanaugh Monday notified the union representing roughly 5,000 faculty that the system would not submit to binding arbitration to resolve that dispute, now 2 years old.
Leaders of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties meet Saturday in State College and could seek a strike authorization vote from the union membership, officials have said.
