Thirteen people died in crashes investigated by state police over the Thanksgiving holiday, officials announced Monday.

Two of those, a mother and daughter from Maryland, were driving Saturday on Interstate 70 in Washington County when a tractor-trailer crossed the median and crushed their car, prompting a state police investigation.

State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said in a news release that troopers investigated 1,124 crashes from Wednesday to Sunday, 86 of which involved alcohol. He said 349 people were injured in the crashes and two of the fatal crashes involved alcohol.

Last year, 10 people died and 326 were injured in 1,007 crashes investigated by state police during the same period.

Those statistics account only for crashes to which state police responded and do not include crashes investigated by other agencies.
