Six people were killed and 262 others were injured in Labor Day weekend crashes investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police.

That number represents a decrease from last year, when nine people died and 351 others were injured in 783 crashes state police investigated.

Commissioner Frank Noonan said in a statement on Tuesday that state police investigated 746 crashes between Friday and Monday and that 88 of them were alcohol-related, including one of the fatal crashes.

Many of the injuries, he said, could have been avoided if people had worn seat belts.

"If everyone would buckle up each time they get in a vehicle," he said in the statement, "we would reduce the number of people killed and injured on our highways."
