State Rep. Paul Costa said he will reintroduce legislation to give Pittsburgh and other cities authorization to install automated red-light cameras.

The cameras photograph the license plates of drivers who run red lights. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than 500 cities currently use them, including Philadelphia, the only city in Pennsylvania where they are legal.

But they have proven controversial and some lawmakers in other states have moved to eliminate them.

Mr. Costa, D-Wilkins, said studies have shown a one-quarter reduction in fatal crashes at intersections where the cameras were used. He introduced similar legislation in the previous session, but the House did not act on it.
