Quinnipiac poll: Two-thirds of Pennsylvanians think universities overemphasize athletics

A plurality of Pennsylvanians believe sanctions imposed on the Penn State football program last month were too severe, while two-thirds say universities should place less emphasis on athletics, a new Quinnipiac University poll finds.
The poll of 1,494 Pennsylvania adults found 66 percent of respondents said colleges should put less into athletics, to 33 percent disagreeing.
Regarding the National Collegiate Athletic Association's move to strip Penn State of wins, scholarships and funding for its handling of the Jerry Sandusky scandal, 44 percent said the penalties were too severe, 14 percent said they were not severe enough and 33 percent said they were appropriate.
Among households with Penn State graduates or students, 52 percent said the penalties were too severe, to 12 percent saying they should have been harsher and 32 percent in favor.
The poll, done in conjunction with the New York Times and CBS News, has a margin of error of 2.5 percent.
