One state House lawmaker is urging an investigation of emails sent from Democratic Rep. Jesse White to gas driller Range Resources regarding campaign contributions.

Rep. Stan Saylor, a York County Republican who holds his caucus's No. 2 leadership post, said Saturday that an email showing Mr. White berating Range's fundraising assistance and noting the Cecil legislator's simultaneous opposition to a gas severance tax bill raises particular concerns.

"The key is to not be discussing fundraising and legislative issues," Mr. Saylor said. "It impugns all of our reputations."

The legislator said an investigation would either clear Mr. White of any impropriety or determine that other actions are needed. He has not yet filed any formal investigation requests with the attorney general's office or other agency.

Mr. White has defended the tone and content of his emails and says Range released the messages in an effort to embarrass him.
