Orie's sentencing date pushed back two weeks

An Allegheny County judge has continued the sentencing date for state Sen. Jane Orie for two weeks to give both sides additional time to prepare to address a motion by the prosecution for her to repay nearly $1.3 million that was paid by the Senate for her defense.
Judge Jeffrey A. Manning issued the decision Monday afternoon, after previously denying a request by Ms. Orie's attorney asking for a postponement from the original May 21 date to better prepare for the senator's sentencing hearing.
Ms. Orie was convicted on 14 of 24 counts against her, including forgery, tampering with evidence, theft of services and ethics violations. The prosecution accused her of using her legislative staff and resources to run fundraisers and election campaigns.
The forgery counts stemmed from the introduction of doctored documents by the senator during her first trial in the case, which ended in a mistrial in March 2011.
