More than 10,300 Western Pennsylvanians have put their electronic signature on a petition opposing state legislation that will eliminate the ability of local governments to regulate Marcellus Shale drilling and development.

The online petition will be delivered to the Pennsylvania House and Senate, and Gov. Tom Corbett Wednesday, said Ron Slabe, an Upper Burrell resident who started the petition drive Nov. 10 and is using the website SignOn.org to handle the electronic petition signature process.

The petition opposes House Bill 1950 and Senate Bill 1100, which, Mr. Slabe said, "would pre-empt strong local ordinances regulating Marcellus drilling in Pennsylvania and replace them with weak and inadequate state regulations."

The legislation has the backing of the Corbett administration.

The petition can be accessed at signon.org/sign/petition-opposing-pa.
