The special election to fill the state House seat of state Sen. Matt Smith, D-Mt. Lebanon, will be held May 21 in conjunction with the primary election, the office of House Speaker Sam Smith announced Thursday.

In November, Matt Smith won both a fourth term representing the 42nd District in the state House and the state Senate seat formerly held by John Pippy, a Republican who resigned to head the Pennsylvania Coal Alliance.

The 42nd District includes all or parts of Mt. Lebanon, Bethel Park, Scott, Green Tree, Rosslyn Farms and Thornburg.

The special election to fill the House seat of state Auditor General Eugene DePasquale, a York County Democrat, also will be held May 21.

Nominees for the special elections will be chosen by their parties, rather than through a primary election.
