Governor's budget includes funding for new police

Gov. Tom Corbett's 2013-14 budget will include funding for 290 new Pennsylvania State Police cadets and 90 civilian police dispatchers, he announced Tuesday.
The state police force has been battered by retirements lately and another 1,243 are eligible to leave by June. The budget would bring on classes of 115 cadets in April, 60 in November and 115 next year. Only 90 are due to be hired in this fiscal year.
The governor did not release budget details but the hires will cost an estimated $38 million, police commissioner Frank Noonan said, some of which can be offset by savings from retirements and from a new law allowing state police to share fees from local traffic tickets.
