Student applications to Penn State University for 2013-14 are running 9 percent behind last year's pace, President Rodney Erickson told a board of trustees meeting this afternoon in Hershey.
University officials have attributed the applications decline to factors other than fallout from the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, including a drop in numbers of high school graduates across Pennsylvania that has led to enrollment losses at other universities.
Mr Erickson suggested as much in his report to the board delivered shortly after the 1:30 p.m. meeting in the Hershey Medical Center complex got underway.
He said that despite the decline, the rate of accepted students indicating they will enroll by putting down deposits is up by 3 percent on the main University Park campus and 1 percent at other Penn State campuses around the Commonwealth.
Mr. Erickson did not specify the number of student applications received to date. Applications in 2012 totaled 78,873.
